Have you ever wondered why it cost more to rent a boat than it does to rent a car? On an average automobile rental, the car itself cost about $40,000 and rents for less than $100 per day. If the car is rented for 365 days at lets say $90 per day, in the first year the car has brought in a total of $32,850. If the car rental company sells their rental fleet at the end of the first year of use, they should obtain about 50% of the original value of the car to make about $20,000 from the sale. That's an income of about $53,000 on the use of a $40,000 automobile.
A small boat (no yachts) on the other hand in the North Texas area, can normally only be rented during the summer months due to the weather. With that said, an average boat renting season on Lake Lewisville and other lakes in North Texas is normally about 120 days. Here are some rough figures we used for calculating the income of a boat rental. Lets look at the average pontoon boat. The cost is normally about $20,000 for the top of the line boat; a little less if buying wholesale. If you set the price at $50 per hour to rent, and you could rent it out for 30 hours per week, your income on the rental boat would be $1,500 per week. There are about 17 weeks at Lake Lewisville to rent a boat making the income for a boat come to about $25,500 for the season. Most boat rental companies will either make a contract with a marina and have a special place at the marina to store the boats for rentals, or they may dry dock the boats for a cost savings and only set the boats in the water right before a rental, or they may do like we do, and lease a wet-slip at a marina for each boat. Our boat owners lease their own wet-slips and we sub-lease or rent them out for them. A wet-slip normally cost about $5,000 per year depending on the lake and the marina. After insurance, taxes, maintenance, seasonal employee salaries, a typical boat rental will make a profit of about $15,000 per year less the cost of the boat itself. With that said, the profit margin on a $50 per hour boat rental is very similar to that of a car rental. Boats are normally kept two years for rental, and then traded in or sold out right for about 60% of their original cost.
